UC Sees Record In-State Applicants
The University of California Admits Record Number of California Freshman Applicants
The University of California (UC) has achieved a significant milestone by admitting a record-high number of California freshman applicants for the 2023–24 school year. This accomplishment comes after UC’s dedicated efforts to boost enrollment among state residents.
According to UC officials, a total of 88,285 California freshmen have been admitted, marking a 3.5% increase from the previous year. This exciting news was announced in an Aug. 8 press release.
Earlier this year, UC had already revealed its plans to enhance outreach initiatives in order to attract more California applicants. These efforts have evidently paid off, resulting in a remarkable surge in admissions.

California Governor Gavin Newsom had previously pledged to increase funding for both the UC and the California State University systems if they focused on improving graduation and enrollment rates, particularly among California residents. In his 2023–24 budget, he fulfilled this promise by allocating a 5% funding boost, amounting to $216 million for UC in the upcoming school year.
UC President Michael Drake stated that a portion of the additional funding will be utilized to reduce nonresident undergraduate enrollment and replace those seats with California students at UC’s Berkeley, San Diego, and Los Angeles campuses. This demonstrates UC’s commitment to supporting Californians in their pursuit of higher education.
According to UC enrollment data, 83% of the 230,400 undergraduate students enrolled systemwide in Fall 2022 were California residents. Furthermore, UC has also achieved a record-high number of minority student admissions this year, with a 4% increase compared to the previous year. Among the minority groups, Latino students constitute the largest percentage.
This year, 37.6% of admitted students are Latino, slightly higher than the 37.3% from last year. Additionally, 34.2% of admitted students are Asian-American, 5.5% are black, and approximately 1% are Native American Indians. Notably, the number of Native American Indian students has seen an impressive 11.6% increase since 2022.
Although the overall number of applicants for fall 2023 has decreased by 2% compared to last year, UC’s acceptance rate has slightly increased. The university has admitted 3% more students this year, totaling 157,446 admissions compared to 152,907 in 2022.
Last year, UC Regents established a task force with the goal of increasing undergraduate enrollment by 16,000, as well as the enrollment of resident graduate students.
