DeSantis hints at employing drone strikes on Mexican drug cartels.
Florida Governor Supports Drone Strikes Against Mexican Drug Cartels
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made a bold statement, declaring his approval of using drone strikes to combat drug cartels in Mexico if he were to become president. During a campaign event in Iowa, DeSantis was asked about the possibility of military intervention on Mexican soil. His response was resolute.
“Yes, I have already said that. We will lean in against the drug cartels. We will absolutely reserve the right, if they’re invading our country and killing our people, we have the right to defend this country,”
DeSantis emphasized that the United States has the right to hold drug cartels accountable, even if they do not directly cross the border. He expressed frustration with the Mexican government’s lack of assistance in combating the cartels, stating that if Mexico does not help, the US will take matters into its own hands.
DeSantis went on to compare Mexican drug cartels to foreign terrorist organizations, highlighting their role in trafficking people, sexual abuse, and the smuggling of drugs like fentanyl into the United States. He firmly believes that the cartels pose a significant threat to American lives and that the Mexican government is not doing enough to address the issue.
These remarks align with a proposal introduced by GOP senators earlier this year, which seeks to label Mexican drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). This designation would grant law enforcement increased powers to combat the cartels and their activities.
Mexican Cartels and the Fentanyl Crisis
The impact of Mexican cartels extends beyond border security. These criminal organizations are responsible for smuggling deadly narcotics, such as fentanyl, into the United States. Fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid, is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 49.
According to reports, Mexican cartels import fentanyl from China and then distribute it in various forms, often disguising it as other medications. This illicit trade has resulted in a staggering number of overdose deaths in the United States.
Given the severity of the fentanyl crisis and the devastating consequences it has on American lives, some GOP legislators have suggested military intervention to dismantle Mexican cartel operations. Representative Wesley Hunt of Texas even expressed support for using drones to target fentanyl production facilities in Mexico.
As the debate surrounding the role of the United States in combating Mexican drug cartels continues, Governor DeSantis’ stance on using drone strikes has sparked both support and criticism. Only time will tell if this approach will become a reality in the fight against drug cartels.
