Republican Candidate Pledges to Sign a New ‘Declaration of Independence’
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy made a bold promise to Iowa voters on Saturday. Speaking at the Iowa State Fair, Ramaswamy declared that his administration would sign a “Declaration of Independence” from communist China.
Ramaswamy, attending Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ Fairside Chat series, addressed the crowd’s concerns about China’s threat to national security. He emphasized the need to break free from dependence on an enemy for our modern way of life.

Ramaswamy drew a parallel to the past, stating that the United States never relied on the USSR for essential goods like shoes or phones. However, today, we depend on communist China for our way of life, which he believes is unsustainable in the long run. Ramaswamy expressed that if Thomas Jefferson, his favorite president, were alive today, he would be signing a “Declaration of Independence” from Communist China.
During his conversation with Iowa voters, Ramaswamy emphasized the need for the United States to grow a “spine.” He argued that the real question is who will end the unhealthy relationship first. While acknowledging that fear and dependence currently drive the U.S.-China partnership, Ramaswamy pledged to speak the hard truth.
This is not the first time Ramaswamy has criticized businesses for collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party. In May, he called out Elon Musk for meeting with China’s foreign minister, accusing him of being “in China’s pocket.”
