GOP Rep Targets DOJ Special Counsel Investigating Hunter Biden
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Criticizes Appointment of Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Investigation
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH), who also serves on the House Oversight Committee, strongly criticized the Department of Justice’s decision to name U.S. Attorney David Weiss as the Special Counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation.
CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan questioned Turner about his confidence in Weiss and his ability to handle the investigation fairly. Turner responded, expressing his concerns about the narrow scope of Weiss’s appointment compared to what was initially given to him by Bill Barr. He emphasized that the appointment only focuses on the specific case brought before Weiss, rather than all matters related to unpaid taxes.
“The concern here, obviously, with Weiss being Special Counsel is that he was the one that allowed the statute limitations to expire on some very critical felony charges that could have been brought against Hunter Biden.”
Brennan inquired about the reason behind Weiss’s decision to let the statute of limitations expire. Turner revealed that an IRS whistleblower claimed it was interference from the Department of Justice. While Turner acknowledged that it may not be prosecutorial misconduct, he suggested it could be prosecutorial malpractice. He emphasized the significance of the expired statute of limitations, which allowed Hunter Biden to keep $125,000 in unpaid taxes.
Brennan then raised the question of whether Republicans were alleging a conspiracy behind the expiration of the statute of limitations. Turner clarified that it was not a conspiracy but an actual occurrence. Brennan further pressed, asking if Weiss deliberately allowed the statute of limitations to pass. Turner stated that Weiss must answer those questions and explain why it happened.
“The IRS whistleblowers said that it was interference from the Department of Justice that allowed them to expire. The prosecutor, Weiss, had been working with Hunter Biden and his attorney and actually been getting waivers for types of limitations period and he stopped getting the waivers. So he certainly was knowledgeable, aware that it was going to be expiring and then something occurred where he allowed those to expire.”
Turner then shifted his focus to the release of bank records by James Comer, which indicated that over $20 million in funds came from foreign sources and went to Hunter Biden and his family. He expressed concern as the Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, stating that foreign individuals making payments to the son of the vice president, now son of the president, raises suspicions of buying influence rather than seeking business advice.
When Brennan mentioned that Hunter Biden’s attorney claimed no crime had been substantiated, Turner responded by highlighting the different standards between political discourse and legal benchmarks in court. He criticized the attorney’s political approach during the interview, emphasizing that it was not a courtroom setting.
