Taiwan VP stands firm against China’s threats over U.S. visit.

Taiwan’s⁤ Vice President, ⁣William‍ Lai, has declared that Taiwan will not⁢ yield to China’s threats and military exercises. During‍ a brief visit to New York City, Lai emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to freedom and democracy while pushing back against⁤ China’s constant aggression. Despite facing ‌heavy criticism‌ from Beijing, Lai remains resolute in his stance.

Lai⁢ made these remarks during a speech at a lunch banquet, ⁣stating, “When Taiwan is⁣ safe, the world is safe, and when there is peace on the Taiwan Strait, there will be⁣ world⁤ peace. No matter how great ‍the threat of authoritarianism⁣ is to Taiwan, we absolutely will not be scared nor cower,⁤ we will uphold the values⁤ of democracy and freedom.”

China ⁣has previously expressed its ‍opposition to Lai’s visits, with ⁢the Chinese ambassador ⁣to the U.S. stating that preventing⁤ Lai from visiting⁣ America was ‌a “priority” for the communist country. Lai’s stopover in New York was part of⁤ his journey to Paraguay for the inauguration of its⁤ new president. Paraguay‍ is‌ one of ⁢the few countries that maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry labeled Lai as a “separatist”⁤ and a “troublemaker” upon his arrival in New York. They also warned of taking “resolute and vigorous‌ measures” to defend China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China has ⁣a history of following through on‍ such⁤ threats, as seen in their extensive military drills following visits by prominent figures like Nancy Pelosi and President Tsai Ing-wen. Experts believe that ⁤China is likely to conduct military‍ drills ⁤once again ⁢following Lai’s return.

Lai, who ⁤is‌ currently a frontrunner‍ in ⁣Taiwan’s ‌upcoming⁤ presidential election, has been associated with the “deep green”⁣ faction of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which leans towards ‍supporting independence. However, since ⁢winning his party’s‍ nomination, Lai has‌ taken a more moderate stance,‌ vowing to maintain the status quo‍ and allowing the Taiwanese people to decide their fate.
