Full House star expresses disappointment over film sale to Great American Family; vows support for LGBTQ+ community.
“Full House” actress Jodie Sweetin expressed her disappointment when she learned that one of her upcoming films had been sold to the family-oriented media company Great American Family (GAF).
In a surprising turn of events, the film titled “Craft Me a Romance” was acquired by GAF, a network where Sweetin’s former “Full House” co-star, Candace Cameron Bure, now serves as the chief creative officer and frequently collaborates. Bure had previously left their competitor, The Hallmark Channel.
Sweetin shared her thoughts on this unexpected development in a statement, stating, “Sometimes, as actors, we have no control over which network acquires the projects we are involved in, nor are we part of the selling process. Therefore, I was taken aback when I discovered through the press that the independent film I worked on over a year ago had been sold to Great American Family.”
She further expressed her disappointment, but also revealed her commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community by pledging to donate any potential or future earnings from this sale to LGBTQ+ organizations.
GAF CEO Bill Abbott and Bure discussed their plans in a joint interview in November 2022, emphasizing their focus on “traditional marriage” as a differentiating factor from Hallmark, which has been featuring more LGBTQ storylines in recent years.
Bure expressed her excitement about creating heartwarming family and faith-filled programming, stating, “I am constantly seeking ways to inspire people to live purposeful lives.”
While GAF does not strictly prohibit same-sex love stories, the comments about traditional marriage received criticism from several celebrities.
JoJo Siwa voiced her disappointment, saying, “Honestly, I can’t believe that after everything that happened just a few months ago, she would not only create a movie with the intention of excluding LGBTQIA+ individuals, but also discuss it in the media. This is disrespectful and hurtful to an entire community of people.” Sweetin responded to Siwa, saying, “You know I love you.”
The film “Craft Me a Romance” will premiere on GAF on September 16. It features Sweetin as the owner of an arts and crafts store who is faced with the ultimatum of selling her store or going out of business.
