During a presentation to the Great Park Board, Tom Carpenter, a vice president at Almquist, the commercial real estate developer behind the project, emphasized the importance of creating a unique and special atmosphere. He explained that the challenge lies in making the food and beverage offerings stand out, so people are enticed to visit specifically for them, rather than just enjoying them while already at the park.
The food hall will be housed in three different hangars, connected by pathways, creating a dynamic and interconnected space within the park. One of the hangars, currently owned by developer FivePoint, will be exchanged for a plot of land designated for affordable housing. The other hangar, currently used for special events, will be relocated within the park.
The Great Park, formerly the Marine Corps El Toro Air Station, boasts large airplane hangars that were left behind when the air station was decommissioned in 1999.
Vice Mayor Tammy Kim expressed her desire for the food hall to reflect the city’s diverse population by offering a variety of culinary options. Mr. Carpenter assured her that each project is tailored to the community it serves, ensuring a curated mix of food choices that will appeal to everyone.
