Beverly Hills sues hotel workers union over noise complaints.

The City⁣ of ​Beverly ⁢Hills Takes Legal Action Against ⁢Union Over Noisy Protests

The city of Beverly Hills has filed ‌a​ lawsuit against the union representing striking hotel workers, ‌claiming that their early-morning protests outside two hotels have been causing disturbances and⁣ noise‌ complaints from nearby residents.

The lawsuit, filed in the Los ‌Angeles Superior Court, accuses ⁢Unite Here! Local 11 of creating a public nuisance and seeks a court order to ‍restrict the protests ‍to the hours of 8 a.m. to ⁤10 p.m. ‌The complaint⁤ alleges‍ that the demonstrators have been‍ using drums and⁤ bullhorns, starting as early‌ as 5:30 a.m., outside⁢ the Beverly Hilton and Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.

According to the suit, residents in‌ the vicinity of Wilshire⁢ and Santa Monica ‌boulevards have ⁢reported whistles, shouting, and screaming coming from the protest area. When the ⁣Beverly‍ Hills police investigated the complaints, the⁢ protesters refused to identify ⁤themselves, except for union ⁤representatives like Lorena Lopez.

The suit claims that​ on July ‍24, City Manager Nancy Hunt-Coffey spoke⁣ with a union leader named Sol and expressed concerns about the noise disturbance caused ⁤by the drums, ⁣especially for families with children who were home for the ‍summer. Sol allegedly agreed to delay the demonstrations‍ until 8 a.m. ⁢and⁤ stop⁣ the drum beating, but the agreement was not upheld.

Two days later, Beverly Hills Police Department‌ Capt. Giovanni ⁤Trejo spoke with Lorena ‍Lopez, requesting that the protest noise be ceased before ‌8‍ a.m. However, Lopez did not commit ⁢to complying with the request.

According to⁣ the complaint, the following day, the police ‌received complaints from Beverly Hilton ⁢staff and security about aggressive confrontations, bullhorns being blown in ears, ⁢blocked traffic, ‌and ⁤up-close screaming. The suit⁣ also alleges‌ that protesters broke ‍through a barrier⁢ and injured a security guard.

The demonstrations have persisted, with individuals still arriving to protest.
