Newsom promotes ‘California Family Agenda,’ discusses transgender student policy in local districts.
Gov. Gavin Newsom Highlights California’s Family Agenda
Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom recently held a press conference to discuss their agenda for California families. They emphasized the importance of educational and parental choice freedom, as well as the state’s commitment to empowering parental involvement and enriching academic opportunities for students.
“There is no state in America that supports local control and parental engagement like the state of California,” Mr. Newsom said during the conference. “No one comes close.”
Newsom outlined several key initiatives aimed at transforming education in the state. These include improving campus safety, enhancing education quality, providing healthy meals, and prioritizing mental health care. He also emphasized the importance of allowing students to learn without political censorship.
The governor highlighted recent investments in public education, such as $4.1 billion in community schools, the implementation of universal kindergarten by 2025, and the expansion of before- and after-school programs. Additionally, Newsom mentioned the introduction of universal free meals for all students.
During the press conference, Newsom and his wife criticized education laws passed in other states, particularly Florida’s crackdown on critical race theory. They emphasized California’s commitment to parental choice and participation, creating an inclusive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
“At a time when other states are limiting children’s ability to reach their full potential through politically motivated book bans, racist and reductive history curriculums, and the closing of school libraries, we are focusing on the needs of the whole child and family,” Ms. Siebel Newsom said. “California’s family agenda ensures kids have the opportunity and environment in which to thrive, learn, and succeed.”
During the Q&A session, Newsom addressed questions about recent parent notification policies passed by the Chino Valley Unified and Murrieta Unified school districts. These policies require schools to notify parents in writing within three days if their child identifies as transgender, is involved in violence, or shares thoughts of suicide.
Newsom hinted at the possibility of a legislative bill to address these policies, stating that he is working with legislative leaders and the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus to develop a solution.
“They’ve got some language we’re working on … it’s a work-in-progress,” Mr. Newsom said.
