A Missed Opportunity: How the Biden Administration’s⁣ Dependence on the Taliban ‍Led to the Kabul Airport Bombing

A new book reveals the shocking details of the Biden administration’s reliance on the Taliban for security during the chaotic 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal. This dependence resulted in‍ two missed opportunities that could have potentially prevented⁢ the deadly Kabul airport bombing, which tragically⁢ claimed the lives of 13 American service members.

The book, titled Kabul, claims that U.S. officials⁣ were aware of an‍ imminent threat in the days ⁣leading up to the ISIS-K suicide bombing. The attack occurred at the Abbey Gate, the main⁢ entrance‍ to the airport where thousands of Afghans were⁣ desperately trying to evacuate the country.

According to the book, the first missed opportunity to prevent‌ the attack occurred when the Taliban, upon ⁢whom the United States heavily relied for security cooperation, refused to raid a hotel known to be housing ⁣ISIS-K.⁤ The second missed opportunity came when the United States⁤ decided against a drone strike due to a “negative response” from ⁤Taliban officials.

Co-authored by Jerry Dunleavy, an investigator for the GOP committee investigating the withdrawal, and James Hasson, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan,‍ the book sheds ‍light on the dangerous decision to entrust the Taliban with security at Kabul airport. Dunleavy states, “Our‍ findings, revealed in‌ the Pentagon’s own‍ documents and the testimonies of military officers involved in the Afghanistan evacuation, provide damning evidence of the perilous folly of relying on terrorists like the Taliban for airport security.”

Transcripts⁢ from communication ⁣channels, as detailed in the book, expose the knowledge military officials had⁢ about the impending attack. The Daily Mail reports:

An officer, whose name is redacted, describes a meeting of ambassadors and military attachés in Kabul.

‘I shared intelligence about the pending attack, so everyone was aware, and knew it was⁢ happening,’ said the officer. ‘The intelligence community didn’t know the gate, but assessed it would be Abbey Gate due to the number of people there.’

The gate was initially⁣ due⁤ to close around then but the British government and others ⁢lobbied to keep it open as‍ they sought to rescue their last remaining‍ citizens.

The threat of an attack was so high, report Dunleavy and Hassan, that Marines‍ there were ordered on to one knee all night to reduce their exposure to an explosion. A day⁣ later medical units were told to be on alert⁢ for a mass casualty event.

Heartbroken parents of the 13 military service members killed at the airport testified earlier this ‍month, with one father urging ⁢Biden to take ⁢responsibility for his mistakes.

Republicans are pushing for legislation that would compel the State Department to disclose classified information, potentially revealing that the Biden administration was aware in advance of the chaotic ‍nature of the withdrawal.

Michael McCaul (R., Texas), chairman of the House⁢ Foreign Affairs Committee, stated in May, after reviewing a classified cable‍ from State Department officials at the time of ⁣the withdrawal, that the Biden administration ignored warnings‍ from U.S. officials on the ⁣ground.

Meanwhile, despite the revelations, the Biden administration continues to send funds to Afghanistan. The Washington Free Beacon reports that over $2.35 billion has been sent to the country since ⁤the Taliban takeover, despite concerns that the funds ⁢could end up in the hands of the⁣ terrorist regime.
