The International Chess Federation Rules on Transgender Women in Women’s Events
The top chess federation in the world has made a decision regarding transgender women competing in official women’s events.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has stated that transgender women will only be allowed to compete in official women’s events once their gender change has been approved by officials.
Furthermore, FIDE has revealed that they have received numerous recognition requests from transgender players, and the decision-making process can take up to two years.
“Change of gender is a change that has a significant impact on a player’s status and future eligibility to tournaments, therefore it can only be made if there is a relevant proof of the change provided,” FIDE said.
If a women’s title holder decides to transition to male in the future, they will be stripped of their title. However, there is a possibility of reinstatement if the person changes their gender back to female.
Additionally, FIDE has clarified that any transgender player is allowed to participate in the “open” sections of their tournaments.
This decision comes at a time when FIDE is hosting a World Cup tournament, with the renowned Grand Master Magnus Carlsen competing in the event.
