In a heartfelt post on Facebook, Anthony, whose real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford, revealed that he adopted the name Oliver Anthony as a tribute to his grandfather and the Appalachian region where he grew up in the 1930s. He never aspired to be a full-time musician.
“People in the music industry give me blank stares when I brush off $8 million offers,” Lunsford wrote. “I don’t want the fame, the tour buses, or the jet. I simply want to create music that resonates with people.”
Anthony’s music is deeply personal, stemming from his own struggles with mental health and depression. He believes that his songs have connected with millions because they are raw and authentic, devoid of any editing or pretense. It’s the kind of music that he believes we should never have strayed from.

“There’s nothing special about me,” Anthony humbly admits. “I’m not a virtuoso musician, nor am I a saint. I’ve battled mental health issues and used alcohol as a crutch for the past five years. It saddens me to witness the division and strife in our world. I’ve often felt hopeless, watching the decline of the greatest country on Earth.”
Anthony’s journey hasn’t been easy. He dropped out of high school at 17 but later obtained his GED. He spent several years working in various plant jobs in western North Carolina before pursuing his passion for music.

Over the past year, Anthony has shared his songs on social media, garnering thousands to millions of views. His video for “Rich Men North of Richmond” has already amassed an impressive 25.8 million views.
Anthony never anticipated such success. He thought the song might reach 300k views at best. The overwhelming response has left him in awe.
He concludes his post with a poignant message, comparing our current state to the wandering of the Israelites in the desert. He believes that we have strayed from God and allowed false idols to divide us.
