Former Special Counsel to Beau Biden, Hunter Biden’s late brother, now working with Hunter Biden, raises concerns about trustworthiness.
Connections Between Weiss and the Biden Family
According to the Washington Post, U.S. attorney David Weiss, who is now serving as a special counsel in the Biden investigation, had a longstanding working relationship with Hunter Biden’s late brother, Beau Biden. This revelation has raised concerns about Weiss’s impartiality, leading a spokesman for House Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan to question his trustworthiness.
Beau Biden, who was Delaware’s attorney general at the time, and Weiss worked together on various cases during Weiss’s tenure as the state’s acting U.S. attorney. One notable case they collaborated on was a 2010 fraud conviction. The Post‘s report provides further details.
The Post also mentioned an instance where Weiss and then-vice president Joe Biden appeared together at a 2010 ceremony for a Delaware judge, suggesting that their paths crossed during Weiss’s time as acting U.S. attorney.
Weiss’s Controversial Handling of the Hunter Biden Probe
In a recent New York Times article, it was revealed that Weiss had initially considered dropping the Justice Department’s investigation into Hunter Biden without filing any charges. However, this plan changed after IRS whistleblowers alleged that the department was obstructing its own investigation to protect the Bidens from scrutiny.
Weiss eventually offered Hunter Biden a plea deal for gun and tax charges, which would have likely allowed him to avoid jail time. However, the deal unexpectedly collapsed last month, and a revised version offering Biden broad immunity was rejected by Judge Maryellen Noreika. Weiss has stated that the case will likely proceed to trial.
Additional Connections and Concerns
Aside from his working relationship with Beau Biden, Weiss also has ties to a Biden family friend named Derek Hines. Hines, who serves as Weiss’s special assistant in the Biden probe, previously worked as special counsel to Louis Freeh, a former FBI director who had business dealings with Hunter Biden. Freeh also made donations to a college trust for Joe Biden’s grandchildren and joined the board of the Beau Biden Foundation, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon.
Attorney General Merrick Garland, who initially dismissed the need for a special counsel in the Hunter Biden probe, appointed Weiss as special counsel on August 11.
