Joe Scarborough wonders if the MAGA movement is a ‘cult’ due to Trump’s fan base.
Is the “Make America Great Again” Movement a Cult?
MSNBC commentator Joe Scarborough sparked a heated debate on Monday as he questioned whether the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement can be classified as a cult. This discussion comes in light of a recent poll revealing that a staggering 71% of respondents trust what former President Donald Trump says more than their own friends and family.
Scarborough’s co-host and wife, Mika Brzezinski, expressed sympathy for those involved in what she referred to as a cult. While Scarborough acknowledged that they couldn’t definitively label it as such, he emphasized the unwavering loyalty of Trump’s supporters.
Unveiling the Cult-like Characteristics
“If we delve into the question of whether this is a cult or not, we must acknowledge that we lack the expertise to make that determination,” Scarborough admitted on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. ”However, it is disconcerting to witness the immense trust placed in a failed reality TV host, surpassing even that of family members, friends, and religious leaders. This raises eyebrows and prompts experts in cult studies to take notice.”
Later in the show, Scarborough delved deeper into the issue, expressing bewilderment at how people could still support Trump in 2023. He turned to the internet to explore the definition of a cult, highlighting the characteristics of dynamic, charismatic leaders who seek to control their followers for personal gain.
Trump’s Unique Brand of Leadership
“Interestingly, this definition doesn’t quite align with Trump, as he lacks any specific teachings or doctrines other than ‘Follow me blindly,'” Scarborough observed. “It’s truly twisted that in America, people rally behind a political leader. We must question why individuals proudly display flags of a politician. This is nothing to be proud of.”
The poll, conducted by CBS and YouGov, also revealed that Trump holds a commanding lead among likely Republican primary voters, with 62% indicating they would vote for him. This significant margin places Trump far ahead of Governor Ron DeSantis, who trails at a mere 16%.
Trump has even used these poll results as justification for his decision not to participate in the upcoming Republican debate. Rumors suggest that he may opt for alternative programming, potentially engaging in a one-on-one interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
As the debate surrounding the MAGA movement continues, it remains to be seen whether it truly exhibits cult-like characteristics or if it is simply a fiercely loyal political following.
