American loner Richardson finds lane nine in athletics to be perfect.
Sha’Carri Richardson Triumphs in World 100m Final

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – United States sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson described her victory in the world 100 metres final from lane nine as a testament to her unique journey.
Richardson, who was placed in the outside lane due to her performance in the semi-finals, turned this disadvantage into an advantage. She focused solely on her own race, overtaking Jamaican Shericka Jackson and securing her first global title in a championship record time of 10.65 seconds.
“I just felt that I executed an amazing race for myself not even knowing where the other ladies were. I was by myself in my own world which honestly has been like that all my life,” she said.
“I’ve always been in my own world, my own element, so lane nine was perfect for me to do what it is that I know to do and focus on myself.”
In the post-race press conference, the 23-year-old displayed her fierce determination, passionately defending herself against mispronunciations of her name and criticism of her performance in the semi-finals, where she faced a setback.
This was Richardson’s first appearance at the global championships, despite being a prominent figure in women’s sprinting for four years.
She had previously won the U.S. trials for the Tokyo Olympics but was subsequently disqualified after testing positive for cannabis.
Last year, she failed to qualify for the 100m or 200m events at the world championships, watching as Jamaican athletes dominated the podium. Throughout this time, social media exchanges intensified the rivalry, with Usain Bolt advising Richardson to “talk less and train more.” However, her flamboyant style and provocative posts on Instagram garnered her a massive following of 2.4 million fans.
Finally, reaching the world championships, overcoming the semi-final scare, and chasing down the fastest woman of the year, Shericka Jackson, in the final 20 meters felt like a monumental achievement for Richardson.
“Never give up, never allow media or outsiders to define who you are. Always fight, no matter, fight,” she declared when asked about her journey.
“Going into the final, surviving each round, knowing the heavy hitters would be there and that I knew I had to come with them. I’m just happy to sit here knowing it all paid off.”
