RFK Jr. insists Trump, Biden must join debates.
COLUMBIA, S.C—2024 Presidential Hopefuls Prepare for First Primary Debate
Get ready for an exciting showdown as the 2024 Republican presidential hopefuls gear up for their first primary debate in Milwaukee on Aug. 23. However, one notable absence will be former President Donald Trump, who has decided not to participate. While the candidates take the stage, Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be watching from Richmond, Virginia, after speaking at a town hall.
A Call for Democracy
Mr. Kennedy disagrees with President Trump’s decision and believes that every candidate should have the opportunity to debate. “I think it would be better if we have a democracy where every candidate debates,” Mr. Kennedy expressed during a town hall tour in Columbia, South Carolina. He is currently engaging with voters ahead of the February 2024 primary.

Mr. Kennedy believes that both President Biden and President Trump’s absence from the primary debates reflects a lack of faith in the democratic process. He stated, “I suppose he is making a strategic decision that’s based upon his own interest, but I think we’re living in a period when people have lost faith in the democratic process, and they think the system is rigged.”
In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump confirmed his decision not to attend the Republican debates. He cited a CBS poll showing his significant lead in the race as one of the reasons for skipping the debates.
President Trump wrote, “New CBS POLL, just out, has me leading the field by ‘legendary’ numbers. TRUMP 62%, 46 Points above DeSanctimonious (who is crashing like an ailing bird!), Ramaswamy 7%, Pence 5%, Scott 3%, Haley 2%, Sloppy Chris Christie 2%, ’Aida’ Hutchinson 1%. The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had… I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!”
President Trump has long hinted at his reluctance to participate in the debates, citing concerns about media attacks. He also expressed his refusal to sign the loyalty pledge required by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to participate in the GOP primary debate.
Mr. Kennedy believes that both President Trump and President Biden should prioritize respecting American voters by participating in the debates. He emphasized, “Americans shouldn’t feel like we live in the Soviet Union, where the party picks the candidates. I think it would be much better for our democracy if we actually allowed democracy to function and all the candidates participated in debates and town halls.”
While Mr. Kennedy has gained widespread support since announcing his candidacy in April, the Democratic National Committee has already pledged its full support to President Biden, eliminating the possibility of a primary debate.
As the stage is set for the first primary debate, the absence of President Trump has drawn criticism. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the pro-DeSantis super PAC, Never Back Down, have both voiced their disapproval of the former president’s decision.
Mr. Christie wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “If you want to be President you have to show up. Show up at debates, show up at town halls, and show up with the truth. You can’t hide, and you can’t pretend to be someone you aren’t.”
Never Back Down released a video asserting, ”We can’t afford a nominee who’s too weak to debate.”
As the political landscape continues to unfold, all eyes are on the candidates and their commitment to engaging in open and transparent discussions.
