Biden appoints Ed Siskel as White House counsel amidst probes.
President Joe Biden Appoints Ed Siskel as White House’s Top Lawyer
President Joe Biden has chosen Ed Siskel to take over as the White House’s chief legal advisor, replacing Stuart Delery at the beginning of next month.
Biden emphasized Siskel’s impressive career in “defending the rule of law,” stating that his experience makes him the ideal candidate to serve as the next White House counsel. This appointment comes as the president faces scrutiny from special counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into his mishandling of classified documents, with Biden expected to be interviewed. Additionally, federal authorities and congressional Republicans are also looking into his son Hunter Biden.

“During my time as vice president, Ed Siskel played a crucial role in navigating complex challenges and advancing the president’s agenda on behalf of the American people,” Biden said on Tuesday. “With his background as a federal prosecutor and his experience as the top counsel for the city of Chicago, Ed has demonstrated a deep commitment to public service and a strong respect for the law.”
“His extensive experience will allow him to hit the ground running as a key leader on my team, as we continue to make progress for the American people every day,” the president added.
Siskel, a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Chicago Law School, previously served as the deputy counsel in the Obama administration. During his time there, he oversaw the administration’s responses to congressional oversight, including the Solyndra scandal in 2011 and the Benghazi attack in 2012. He also played a role in implementing the Affordable Care Act.
Since his time in the Obama White House, Siskel has worked in private practice twice, with a two-year stint as Chicago’s corporation counsel under former Mayor Rahm Emanuel during Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. Prior to his work in the Obama administration, he served as a senior counsel to the deputy attorney general and associate deputy attorney general at the Justice Department. Siskel also has experience as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois.
Siskel is expected to lead Biden’s defense of his new, more modest federal student loan forgiveness program, among other important issues.
