Lionsgate Film Studio brings back mask mandates ‘immediately’ and ‘until further notice’.
Lionsgate Reinstates Mask Mandates in Santa Monica Offices
The renowned Lionsgate film studio has made the decision to reinstate mask mandates in certain areas of its Santa Monica, California offices. This move comes as a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The response manager for Lionsgate/Starz, Sommer McElroy, stated that the masking policy would be immediately implemented and will remain in effect until further notice. According to Deadline, nearly half of the company’s employees work at their flagship office located at 2700 Colorado Avenue. The policy will specifically apply to the 3rd and 5th floors of the five-story building.
McElroy outlined the requirements, stating, “Employees must wear a medical-grade face covering (surgical mask, KN95, or N95) when indoors, except when alone in a closed office, actively eating or drinking at their desk, or if they are the only individual present in a large open workspace.” These guidelines were reported by Fox News.
In addition to the mask mandate, Lionsgate has also implemented a building entry policy. This policy requires employees to perform a daily self-screening before coming to the office and to notify the company of any new or worsening symptoms or recent international travel within the last 10 days.
The company will also conduct contact tracing and notify individuals who have been in close contact with employees who have tested positive for COVID-19. Lionsgate will provide surgical masks and KN95s at the front desk, and N95 masks will be available upon request.
This decision by Lionsgate aligns with the growing concern over the EG.5 variant of COVID-19 in the United States. While there have been conflicting studies on the effectiveness of mask mandates, the studio has taken this precautionary measure to prioritize the health and safety of its employees.
Conflicting Studies on Mask Mandates
There have been debates surrounding the effectiveness of mask mandates in curbing the spread of COVID-19. A study conducted by the University of Louisville in 2021, using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that although 80% of US states implemented mask mandates during the pandemic, these mandates did not predict lower growth rates of the virus.
The researchers concluded that there is no association between mask mandates and lower transmission rates of SARS-CoV-2 among US states. The study stated, “Our findings do not support the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 transmission rates decrease with greater public mask use.”
