Kathy Hochul’s approval rating declines as most New Yorkers view immigrant influx as a major concern: Poll.
Top Democrats Struggle to Contain Immigrant Influx in New York
Top Democrats in New York are facing a daunting challenge as they try to manage the increasing number of immigrants entering the state. This has led to a majority of voters recognizing the severity of the crisis.
The number of asylum-seekers in New York City has reached approximately 100,000, putting immense pressure on Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) and Mayor Eric Adams to provide shelters and resources for these individuals. After months of deliberation, a recent poll conducted by the Siena College Research Institute revealed that 82% of New York voters consider the immigrant influx to be a serious problem, with 54% describing it as very serious.
Hochul Criticizes Government Response
Governor Hochul has been vocal in her criticism of the federal government and other New York leaders for their handling of the crisis. In a court filing last week, she expressed her dissatisfaction with Mayor Adams and the Biden administration, urging them to provide more support for the immigration crisis. Hochul also called out the city for rejecting several offers from the state, including the provision of new sites.
As a result of her stance, Governor Hochul’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest point ever, standing at 40% compared to 42% in June.
Voters Disapprove of Response
The poll also revealed that a majority of voters disapprove of Governor Hochul’s and Mayor Adams’ handling of the immigrant influx, with 51% and 47% respectively expressing their dissatisfaction. Furthermore, 59% of New Yorkers do not support President Biden’s approach to the situation.
“New Yorkers — including huge majorities of Democrats, Republicans, independents, upstaters, and downstaters — overwhelmingly say that the recent influx of migrants to New York is a serious problem for the state,” stated Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg.
Republican Lawmakers Call for Border Closure
Republican lawmakers in New York have voiced their frustrations over the increasing number of immigrants and are pushing for the closure of the southern border. They argue that significant changes made to border security by the federal government this year have exacerbated the situation.
“Close the border,” exclaimed Representative George Santos (R-NY) outside an immigrant shelter in Queens. “We need to close the floodgates. We need to stop this. This is common sense, folks.”
The poll was conducted a week before the Biden administration approved New York’s request to house over 2,000 immigrants and asylum-seekers at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, a goal that the state had been negotiating with the White House for months.
