Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears Criticizes School Districts for Refusing to Adopt Transgender Policies
Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears has taken a stand against several school districts in the state for their refusal to embrace the state’s guidance and policies regarding transgender students. One of the largest districts in Virginia, Fairfax County Public Schools, recently announced that it would not adopt Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) policy and would continue to respect the names and pronouns chosen by transgender students. Earle-Sears, a strong advocate for school choice, emphasized that the governor’s policies are not controversial and that parents’ rights extend beyond dropping off and picking up their children.
Championing Parental Rights in Education
“The issue is that school boards are acting as judge and jury, imposing their own educational agenda,” Earle-Sears expressed during an appearance on Fox News’s America Reports. “They claim to have made a determination, but in reality, they are not following the law. Something needs to be done.”
Earle-Sears further emphasized that the focus on parental rights in education was instrumental in her and Youngkin’s victory in the 2021 elections. She also stated that a similar approach would be taken in the upcoming fall elections in Virginia, with the Republican Party aiming to regain control of the state Senate to implement stronger laws that protect parents and their rights.
Youngkin’s Criticism of FCPS’s Decision
Gov. Youngkin has also voiced his disapproval of FCPS’s decision to disregard his policy on transgender students. His policy requires school facilities, such as restrooms and locker rooms, as well as gender-specific activities like sports, to be separated based on the student’s biological sex. FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid, on the other hand, informed district families that the district would not only respect the names and pronouns of transgender students but also allow them to use facilities that align with their gender identity.
“The law mandates that the Virginia Department of Education provide model policies, and school boards are required to adopt policies consistent with those provided by the Department,” explained Youngkin spokeswoman Macaulay Porter to the Washington Examiner. ”The policies of Fairfax County Public Schools deviate from the VDOE model policy guidance and perpetuate the false notion that FCPS knows what’s best for a child, rather than the child’s own parent.”
As Virginia’s fall elections approach, along with the 2024 presidential elections, Youngkin has encouraged Republican voters to participate in early voting to secure seats currently held by Democrats in both state houses and Congress.
