Disgraced FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Faces Challenges Ahead of Trial
Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, is gearing up for his upcoming trial after pleading not guilty to multiple charges related to the collapse of his cryptocurrency empire. However, his attorneys have raised concerns about his ability to focus and prepare for the trial due to various issues.
“Your Honor, that’s outrageous and needs to be remedied,” Attorney Mark Cohen exclaimed during a Manhattan federal court hearing.
One of the major concerns raised by Bankman-Fried’s legal team is the lack of medication for his ADHD at the Metropolitan Detention Center. They claim that without proper medication, he is unable to focus on the trial. Additionally, they highlighted the inadequate diet he has been receiving, consisting mainly of water, bread, and occasionally peanut butter.
“I’m reasonably confident they provide vegetarian options,” Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn assured. “A vegan diet may not be available, but I assume a vegetarian is.”
Bankman-Fried’s attorneys also expressed their frustration with the limited time he has been given to review millions of pages of evidence. They argue that only having two days per week is insufficient for effective defense preparation.
Bankman-Fried’s FTX digital asset exchange collapsed earlier this year, leading to bankruptcy filings. It was revealed that the company was closely linked to sister firm Alameda Research, both controlled by Bankman-Fried and other young business leaders operating from a luxurious penthouse in the Bahamas.
In January, Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. He faced four additional charges the following month, including bank fraud and operating an unlicensed money transfer business.
Recently, federal prosecutors accused Bankman-Fried of using over a hundred million dollars for a “wide-ranging political influence operation.” This revelation came after he donated nearly $40 million primarily to Democratic nominees and political action committees before the 2022 midterm elections. He was also a significant donor to the 2020 Biden presidential campaign and had multiple meetings with senior advisers at the White House prior to his companies’ bankruptcy filings.
Bankman-Fried’s bail was revoked earlier this month, and he was jailed after allegedly tampering with witnesses. He had been under house arrest, but prosecutors claimed that he leaked writings and love letters from his ex-girlfriend to a reporter, jeopardizing his trial.
