Wisconsin Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden announced the tragic death of his eldest daughter on Tuesday.
Van Orden’s press office published a statement saying that his daughter, Sydney Marie Martenis, had died after a difficult year battling an aggressive form of cancer.
“It is with the most profound sense of grief and joy that Sara Jane and I announce the passing of our oldest daughter, Sydney Marie (Van Orden) Martenis, after a year of battling a very aggressive form of cancer. She died peacefully surrounded by her family,” Van Orden said.
The Republican representative shared the devastating news on his official website and his press office’s social media page.
His daughter’s husband, Chris Martenis, also posted a short memorial on social media praising her as a caring and hard working wife and mother.
“She was the hardest working, most thoughtful, and deeply caring person that I know. She was a wonderful mother – she was always surprising me with interesting and challenging experiences for our kids,” Martenis wrote.
Fellow lawmakers showed their support for Van Orden’s tragic loss.
“No parents should have to experience this kind of heartbreak. I’m praying for [Rep. Van Orden] and his family during this tragic time,” said Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
It is unknown what kind of cancer she was battling.
