Transgender surgeries surged threefold pre-pandemic, reveals recent study.

Study⁤ Shows Rise and Fall of Transgender Surgeries

A new study has revealed⁤ an interesting trend in transgender surgeries over the past few ⁤years. From 2016 to 2019, the number of patients undergoing gender-transitioning surgeries steadily increased, only to experience a decline⁣ during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the period ‍of 2016 to⁤ 2019, approximately 48,000 individuals underwent these transformative surgeries.⁤ The peak was reached ⁣in 2019, with around 13,000 procedures performed. However, ⁢the numbers dropped in 2020, as reported in a study published in the JAMA Network Open journal.

Tracking Gender Transition Surgeries

The researchers collected their data‌ by analyzing patient records that included the diagnosis code of⁣ “gender identity disorder” or “transsexualism.” While these terms‌ are still used in some medical‌ records, they are considered outdated or offensive ⁢by many.

It is worth noting that the study’s findings may not fully capture the entire transgender population, as not all individuals⁣ seeking gender transition surgeries may have ‌been included in the data.

Of those who underwent these surgeries, 52% were between the ages of 19 and 30,‌ while more than 21% were aged 31 to ⁢40. This highlights that a significant portion of the transgender community ‌seeking these procedures falls within these age ranges.

Interestingly, breast and‌ chest procedures were found to be twice as common ⁤as other types of transgender surgeries. This suggests that individuals seeking gender transition often prioritize these specific⁤ procedures.
