Co-defendant Chesebro unexpectedly demands ‘speedy trial’ in Donald Trump indictment.

Attorney Kenneth Chesebro Demands ⁣Speedy ⁣Trial⁢ in Trump Election Subversion Case

Attorney Kenneth Chesebro, one of 19 individuals charged in a sweeping racketeering case⁣ involving former President Donald Trump’s​ alleged efforts to subvert the ‍2020 election in Georgia, is making⁢ a‌ bold ​demand for a speedy trial. Chesebro’s defense team, consisting of Scott Grubman ⁤and Manny Arora, ⁢filed a motion with Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, citing ⁣Georgia state ⁤law that sets a strict time limit for a fair trial.

“Mr. Chesebro has given‍ his official notice⁣ that he intends to ​avail himself of that ⁢right. Mr. Chesebro maintains his ⁣innocence⁣ and remains ⁣confident⁣ as the legal process continues,”

Chesebro, who collaborated with local ‌GOP officials in Georgia to organize an alternate slate of ⁤electors, ⁣is pushing for a trial even earlier than ‍the ⁤requested ‌March start⁢ date⁤ proposed by District Attorney Fani Willis. Georgia’s​ speedy trial rules dictate that Chesebro’s case ⁣must be tried by the end of October. However, complications may arise as three other defendants⁢ are ‍currently seeking to move their case to federal court in Atlanta.

Legal experts have cautioned that cases ‌involving Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act can often take years before reaching ‌trial. Many have expressed ⁣skepticism regarding the feasibility of Willis’s​ proposed timetable. Chesebro’s request for a speedy trial sharply⁢ contrasts ⁤with Trump’s legal strategy in his own criminal​ cases, ‌where he has‌ consistently ⁣sought to delay⁣ proceedings until after ‌the⁣ election.

In a subsequent filing on Thursday, Chesebro ⁣requested an expedited ⁤arraignment to swiftly commence ​his trial in the criminal case. Arraignments⁤ are already⁢ scheduled to begin ⁣next week and ⁤run through September 8, although Judge Scott McAfee has not indicated the⁢ order or timing of the proceedings.

Jeff Brickman, ⁣an ‍Atlanta-based attorney,⁢ described Chesebro’s filings as a “strategic decision”⁤ that ⁢is ⁣rarely seen. He suggested that the defense may be testing the state’s ⁢preparedness or attempting to catch them off guard. Brickman emphasized the importance ​of‍ being cautious when making such strategic decisions.

District Attorney Fani Willis has previously stated her intention to try all 19 defendants simultaneously.‍ Chesebro faces charges including⁢ violating⁤ the ⁤RICO ⁤Act, conspiring⁤ to impersonate a public officer, conspiring to file a ⁣false document, and‍ multiple counts of⁢ conspiring to commit forgery ⁤and false statements.

Chesebro​ is ⁤also ​believed to ‌be co-conspirator 5 in special counsel Jack Smith’s ⁤federal case in Washington, D.C., which focuses on Trump’s alleged attempts to subvert the‍ 2020 election results.
