Biden Admin invests $24M in mRNA tech for cancer, diseases.
The Biden Administration’s $24 Million Investment in mRNA Technology to Fight Cancer
The Biden administration is making a significant investment of up to $24 million to develop messenger RNA-based (mRNA) platforms and technology aimed at more effectively fighting cancer and other diseases. This investment is part of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H)’s “Curing the Uncurable via RNA-Encoded Immunogene Tuning” (CUREIT) project, led by a team at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

The funding for CUREIT will be granted over a three-year period. This investment aligns with President Biden’s Unity Agenda, which aims to bring Republicans and Democrats together to make progress on issues such as combating cancer, tackling the opioid epidemic, and addressing the mental health crisis.
CUREIT aims to create a “toolbox of mRNA and related technologies” that can enhance immune responses, including targeting and attacking cancerous tumors. These technologies have the potential to extend to autoimmune disorders, transplants, and infectious diseases.
Vaccines ‘Saved Millions’
Multiple COVID-19 vaccines, including those from Pfizer and Moderna, have been developed using mRNA technology platforms. The White House highlights that these vaccines have saved millions of lives worldwide. The utilization of mRNA platforms in fighting cancer and other diseases has the potential to revolutionize medical treatments.
While concerns have been raised by some experts regarding mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, the benefits of these vaccines in saving lives cannot be ignored. Ongoing research and monitoring are essential to ensure their safety and effectiveness.
‘Potential Breakthrough in Treating Cancers’
Researchers at Emory University’s Santangelo lab are working on developing a novel class of mRNA-based drugs to precisely regulate genes in individual immune cells. This approach aims to enhance immune function and fight against cancer. By combining mRNA-encoded antigens with gene modulation technology, specific immune responses can be significantly enhanced. This technology offers a potential breakthrough in treating cancers, autoimmune disorders, and infectious diseases.
President Biden sees this investment as an important step forward in achieving his goal of creating breakthroughs in preventing, detecting, and treating cancer and other diseases. The administration’s commitment to biomedical research and innovation is crucial in advancing healthcare and improving lives.
