DeSantis triumphs in debate, Haley gains popularity – FiveThirtyEight/WaPo poll.
A Shift in Support: DeSantis Gains Ground in Republican Primary
A recent poll conducted before and after the first 2024 Republican Party presidential primary debate has revealed an intriguing shift in voter preferences. According to the poll, more Republican voters who watched the debate are now considering voting for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to be the party’s nominee than any other candidate, including former President Donald Trump. Additionally, the poll highlighted former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley as the candidate who gained the most ground.
The new data from a FiveThirtyEight/Washington Post/Ipsos poll showed that DeSantis garnered 29% of the vote, with Vivek Ramaswamy receiving 26% and Haley receiving 15%. Among GOP primary voters who expressed their willingness to consider each candidate, former President Donald Trump, who chose not to debate, initially held the top spot with 66.2% considering voting for him. However, after his absence from the debate, that number dropped to 61.4%. On the other hand, DeSantis entered the night at the #2 spot with 63% considering voting for him, and after his performance, he moved to #1 with 67.5%. Haley experienced the most significant surge, going from just 30% to 47%.
Another poll, commissioned by the New York Post, sought to determine which candidate viewers believed won the debate. This poll, conducted by a Canadian-owned market research and analytics company, found that 23% of voters chose Ramaswamy as the winner, 21% favored DeSantis, and 11% selected former Vice President Mike Pence.
The Washington Post poll also assessed the candidates’ favorable and unfavorable ratings. DeSantis emerged with the highest overall favorable rating at 72.4% and the highest net favorable rating at 47%. Haley witnessed a significant boost in her net favorable rating, rising by 13 percentage points from 26% to 39%. Conversely, Ramaswamy experienced a decline of 9 percentage points, going from 37% to 28%. Trump’s net favorability dipped from 31% to 24%.
Among the candidates, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) had the lowest unfavorable rating at 23.2%, while DeSantis had the second-lowest unfavorable rating at 26.8%. Scott also secured the second-best net favorable rating at 42%.

The same poll also inquired about the activities of Republican primary voters who did not watch the debate. Only 7% stated that they watched Trump’s interview with Tucker Carlson, which ranked lower than several other options. These alternatives included doing housework at 11% and watching something else on TV at 29%. Interestingly, a report revealed that approximately 15 million people clicked and watched at least 2 seconds of the 45-minute interview. This number surpasses the viewership of the live debate, which was roughly 13 million.
