New Yorkers unite against city’s migrant housing proposal.
Hundreds of New Yorkers Fight Back Against City’s Plan to House Migrants in Converted School
Hundreds of New Yorkers took to the streets on Thursday evening to protest a controversial plan to house migrants in a Staten Island school, according to WABC-TV.
The city of New York recently purchased the St. John Villa Academy and decided to convert it into a facility to accommodate approximately 300 migrants, as reported by WABC-TV.
However, the local community is concerned about the safety implications of housing migrants in a residential area with two nearby schools.

During the protest, three arrests were made, according to WABC-TV.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul revealed that the state has already served around 100,000 migrants and sent a list of demands to the Biden administration for assistance.
Hochul requested expedited work permits for the migrants, additional funds for education, more shelters, reimbursements for National Guard deployments, and payments for future costs associated with their presence.
For more than a year, we have faced an unprecedented surge in asylum seekers coming to New York.
This crisis is not slowing down. That’s why today, I sent a formal request to the @WhiteHouse to take a series of actions to support the more than 100,000 asylum seekers in New York.

However, the White House expressed reluctance to fulfill all of Hochul’s demands, attributing New York’s migrant crisis to congressional inaction.
Despite the ongoing debate, the city’s plan to house migrants in the converted school remains in motion.
