Yale students receive crime survival guides from police union, featuring ‘Grim Reaper’.
Welcome to Yale University: A Survival Guide
As students embark on their journey at Yale University, they were greeted with a unique welcome package. The Ivy League school’s police union distributed “Survival Guide for First-Year Students of Yale University” flyers, featuring the ominous figure of the Grim Reaper.
“The incidence of crime and violence in New Haven is shockingly high, and it is getting worse,” reads the flyer from the Yale Police Benevolent Association.
With a picture of a skull in a Grim Reaper hood, the flyer serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that students may face in New Haven, Connecticut, where Yale is located. The police union warns students about the “shockingly high” crime rates and wishes them “good luck” in navigating their new surroundings.
Murders have doubled, burglaries are up 33%, and car thefts are up 56% in the seven months ending July 23, the police union warned.
These flyers bear a striking resemblance to the infamous “Welcome to Fear City” flyers distributed by the NYPD in the crime-ridden New York City of the 1970s. However, the statistics provided by the police union are not to be taken lightly. City spokesman Len Speiller confirmed the accuracy of these alarming data points.
Nevertheless, some Yalies do manage to survive New Haven and even retain their personal property,” the flyer said.
Despite the grim outlook, the police union offers valuable safety advice to students. They urge students to avoid the streets after 8 p.m., refrain from walking alone, steer clear of public transportation, and stay on campus for their own protection.

However, both city and Yale officials have criticized the police union for distributing these unsettling flyers to incoming students. Yale University officials labeled the flyers as “misinformation” and deemed them “disturbing and inflammatory.”
“The university supports the right of union members to rally peacefully, but today’s leafleting both ran counter to the spirit of the day and detracted from the exemplary work performed by Yale Police officers, Public Safety team members, and their partners at the New Haven Police Department,” Yale said.
Yale officials assert that robberies and burglaries have actually decreased on campus and in New Haven. The most reported crime on campus is the theft of unattended and unsecured laptops, cell phones, and motorized scooters.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker strongly criticized the flyer, calling it “totally offensive” and stating that it spreads false and scary information. He emphasized that crime rates in New Haven have decreased since 2020, contrary to the flyer’s claims.
“As the Mayor stated at the press conference, when you look most of the trends over time, crime is down,” said Speiller, the city spokesman, adding that you can ”cherry pick certain data points to construct a false narrative.”
While the flyer may evoke memories of the 1970s New York City pamphlets that warned tourists to stay away, it is important to consider the context and the efforts being made to ensure the safety of Yale students. As they embark on their academic journey, students must remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to navigate their new environment.
