Deadly mosquito-borne illness hits NYC, infecting 3-4.
Breaking News: West Nile Virus Detected in New York City
In a recent announcement, health officials revealed that three cases of West Nile virus have been identified in New York City. Two cases were reported in Queens, while one was found in Manhattan. An additional case is currently under investigation on Staten Island.
The city’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, emphasized the importance of prevention measures in a news release. He stated that the city is actively engaged in public education, treating marshy areas, and conducting mosquito spraying to minimize the spread of West Nile virus.
To protect themselves from this mosquito-borne illness, New Yorkers are advised to take precautions recommended by Dr. Vasan. These include using insect repellent, especially during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Additionally, individuals should regularly empty containers holding standing water to prevent mosquito breeding. If standing water is observed, it is important to report it by calling 311.
The New York City Department of Health has provided a list of additional preventive measures:
- Ensure windows have screens and repair or replace any damaged screens.
- Clean and properly drain roof gutters.
- Maintain cleanliness and proper chlorination of swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs. Cover or keep them empty when not in use.
- Remove water that collects on pool covers.
- Individuals with compromised immune systems should stay indoors during peak mosquito activity.
Understanding West Nile Virus
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease in the United States. It is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
The highest number of cases occurs during mosquito season, which spans from summer to the end of fall, with peak activity in August and September. Currently, there is no vaccine or specific medication to treat the infection.
