Taiwan Navy and Aircraft mobilized as Chinese force nears island.
Taiwan Navy and Aircraft Ordered to Respond After Chinese Force Approaches Island
The Taiwan defense ministry announced on Saturday that Chinese military aircraft and vessels are heading for the island, just days after the United States approved a $500 million arms deal with Taiwan. This move comes as part of efforts to enhance Taiwan’s defense capabilities and prepare for current and future threats.
According to the Associated Press, the defense ministry reported that 32 aircraft and nine vessels from the People’s Liberation Army and China’s navy were spotted between Friday morning and Saturday morning. More than half of these aircraft crossed into the Taiwan Strait or entered the island’s aircraft identification zone, prompting the Taiwanese military to respond by instructing its own aircraft and military vessels.
The arms deal includes advanced equipment such as Infrared Search and Track (IRST) systems, computer software, and additional parts for Taiwan’s military aircraft. The State Department stated that this deal supports Taiwan’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and improve its capability to defend its airspace, provide regional security, and enhance interoperability with the United States through its F-16 program.
China strongly disapproved of the arms deal, with Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang calling it a “gross interference” and a “heinous act.” China demands that the United States adhere to its previous commitment to stay out of Taiwan’s fight for independence.
The situation continues to unfold, and the State Department has not yet responded to requests for comment.
