Governor Seeks Federal Help
New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently urged President Joe Biden to take prompt and significant action to address the illegal immigrants crisis in the state. She emphasized that managing and controlling the nation’s borders is the federal government’s direct responsibility. Governor Hochul highlighted the arrival of over 100,000 illegal immigrants in New York City since the spring of 2022, primarily from the U.S. southern border.
In her letter to President Biden, Governor Hochul outlined various actions that the federal government must take, including providing housing, support, and work authorization for the illegal immigrants seeking asylum. She also requested funding for the New York National Guard members who have been assisting in sheltering the illegal immigrants across the state.
The federal government has already contributed $145 million in direct funding to address the surge of illegal immigrants. However, Governor Hochul stated that this amount is insufficient to cover the high costs of providing services and assistance to migrants arriving in New York. She estimated that the crisis could cost the state an additional $4.5 billion next year.
State and City Actions
Governor Hochul’s administration has allocated $1.5 billion in state aid to address the influx of illegal immigrants. These funds are being used for healthcare, shelter costs, National Guard personnel, legal services, and voluntary relocation programs. Additionally, the governor’s office recently announced a $20 million investment to expedite the casework filing process for over 30,000 illegal immigrants seeking asylum.
On August 25, Governor Hochul extended the executive order declaring a state of emergency over the illegal immigrant crisis. Meanwhile, New York City is projecting a cost of $12 billion to support the influx of illegal immigrants. Mayor Eric Adams has also called for increased federal and state action to address the situation.
In July, the city announced that illegal immigrants would be given a 60-day notice to find alternate housing and move out of the shelters provided to them. Mayor Adams emphasized that the city has reached its capacity and cannot accommodate more individuals. The illegal immigrant crisis in New York continues to pose significant challenges.
