NASCAR driver Ryan Preece rolls multiple times in intense crash.
NASCAR driver Ryan Preece defied the odds and walked away from a terrifying crash during the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. After his Ford Mustang violently barrel-rolled about a dozen times, Preece was discharged from a Florida hospital early Sunday morning.
Stewart-Haas Racing announced that Preece was returning to North Carolina after overnight observation at the Halifax Health Medical Center. Despite the harrowing incident, Preece remained “awake, alert and mobile” and was even able to communicate with his loved ones.
The 32-year-old professional racecar driver was on Lap 156 of the 160-lap race when his No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford took flight. The car lifted off the ground, tumbled in the air, and rolled on the grass near the racetrack’s back straightaway before finally coming to a stop on all four tires.

“This is just violent,” exclaimed NASCAR on NBC analyst Jeff Burton. “Look at this car. That is just amazing that something that weighs over 3,500 pounds can get in the air like that.”
NASCAR reported that Preece’s rear bumper made contact with another car, causing it to veer left across the nose of his teammate Chase Briscoe’s car. This collision sent Preece’s car soaring through the air and spinning out of control.

After the chaotic ordeal, Preece managed to stabilize his vehicle on the ground. With the assistance of the AMR Safety Team emergency workers, he climbed out of the car and was transported on a gurney to the infield care center, and then to Halifax Health Center.
“If you want to be a race car driver, you better be tough. … I’m coming back,” Preece declared in an X-post just two hours after the race.

Briscoe, who witnessed the crash, expressed his concern for Preece and his family. “Just thinking about him and his family, you know that’s a teammate there. Just super unfortunate to see that happen to anybody, let alone a teammate. Hopefully, he’s OK. Just thinking about him and praying for him,” Briscoe told Racing America.
It’s worth noting that Briscoe himself experienced a similar crash during the Coke Zero Sugar 400 in 2022. He understands the dangers of these high-speed races and believes that changes need to be made to prevent such incidents in the future.
“We can’t wreck cars like that every time we come to a superspeedway,” Briscoe emphasized. “These cars, with how the bottom is, as soon as they get any air, it just flips them right over. Whenever you’re running 190 mph, and you go airborne, it’s not good. Especially when there’s grass and stuff involved. We definitely need to do something. I don’t know what it is that we can do, but we need to do something.”
Despite the crash, Preece’s spirits remained high. Saturday night’s race was his last chance to qualify for the 2023 playoffs, according to Motorsport.com. While Preece was being treated, the race continued into overtime, and Chris Buescher emerged as the victor.
“Ryan is a good friend of mine,” Buescher shared with NBC. “While we were in Victory Lane, we got word that he’s at the hospital, that they’re running through a lot of stuff and that he’s doing well. That’s good to hear.”
