California sues Chino Valley school board for transgender notification policy.

California Attorney General Files Lawsuit⁢ Against Chino Valley School Board Over Transgender Policy

California’s ‌Attorney General, Rob Bonta, has taken legal action against the conservative-leaning school board in Chino Valley. The lawsuit is in response to the board’s policy that requires parents to be notified if their child openly identifies as transgender.

“The forced outing⁤ policy wrongfully endangers the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of non-conforming students ‍who lack an accepting ⁤environment in the classroom and at home,” Bonta stated in a press release. “Our message to ‌Chino Valley Unified and all school districts in California is ‌loud and⁢ clear: We ‍will ⁢never stop‌ fighting⁢ for ‌the civil rights ‍of LGBTQ+ students.”

The controversial notification rules, referred to ⁤as a “forced outing policy,” are triggered when a child ‍requests to identify with a gender different from what is stated on their birth‌ certificate or asks to use a different bathroom. School staff ⁢must⁤ inform parents in writing within three days if a student falls under either of these categories.

Small Businesses Feel Abandoned by Lawmakers‍ Amid Spike in Retail Thefts

Meanwhile, small businesses are expressing⁢ their helplessness ⁤over ⁤a surge in retail thefts and ⁢claim they have been ‍abandoned by lawmakers.

“The forced outing policy wrongfully endangers the physical, mental, ⁣and emotional ⁤well-being of non-conforming students⁢ who lack ⁤an accepting environment ⁤in the classroom and at home,” Bonta‍ stated in a press release. “Our message to Chino Valley ‍Unified and all school districts in California is ⁢loud and clear: We will ‍never stop fighting ⁢for the civil rights‍ of LGBTQ+ students.”

The Chino Valley Unified Board passed the controversial rule with a 4-1 vote last month, leading to protests from hundreds of‌ individuals. Sonja Shaw, the Board president and a parent, defended the ⁤rule as a means to protect parental rights.

“We will stand our ground and protect our children with all we can because we are not breaking the law,” Shaw ⁢told the Los Angeles Times in response to Bonta’s lawsuit.‍ “Parents have a⁣ constitutional right ‍in the upbringing ‌of⁤ their children, period. Bring it.”

Bonta argues that the rule discriminates against ⁢students and violates‍ the state’s equal protection clause. The lawsuit⁢ also highlights how the policy ⁣goes against the California government code, which guarantees‍ equal rights and opportunities for every‌ student and prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and expression.

California Democrats have been actively opposing Republican-led school boards ⁢in the blue state that⁣ have attempted to implement similar transgender policies ⁣and LGBT restrictions. Earlier this year, Governor Gavin‌ Newsom intervened in a debate with a Temecula school board that aimed to ban textbook materials referencing LGBT advocate and San Francisco politician Harvey Milk. The Temecula Valley Unified School ⁢District reversed its decision after Newsom threatened to issue fines. Recently, the Temecula ⁢school ‍board ⁢voted to adopt the same gender identity disclosure ⁢policy as Chino Valley.
