Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Lives in Florida
In a devastating incident on Monday morning, a Broward County Sheriff’s Fire Rescue helicopter experienced engine failure and crashed into an apartment building in Pompano Beach, Florida. The crash resulted in the loss of two lives and injuries to four others.
Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony informed reporters that authorities received a distress call at approximately 8:45 a.m., prompting three emergency crew members to quickly board a Eurocopter EC135 rescue helicopter. However, just two minutes after takeoff from the Pompano Beach Airpark, a fire broke out onboard, leading to mechanical issues that ultimately caused the helicopter to crash into a nearby triplex building.
Tragically, Captain/Flight Paramedic Terryson Jackson, 50, and an unidentified woman in her home lost their lives in the crash. The other two crew members and two additional individuals were transported to Broward Health with minor injuries.
Sheriff Tony spoke highly of Captain Jackson, describing him as a dedicated professional who had an unwavering commitment to his community. The two surviving crew members were identified as Pilot Daron Roche, 37, and firefighter/paramedic Mikael “Mike” Chaguaceda, 31.
As the community mourns this devastating loss, Sheriff Tony emphasized that despite their grief, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office remains prepared to respond to future emergencies. He acknowledged the pain and challenges that lie ahead but assured the public that their focus and dedication will not waver.
Video footage captured by witnesses shows the helicopter trailing smoke before breaking apart and spiraling out of control upon impact. Additional videos depict the apartment building engulfed in flames as the two surviving passengers manage to escape.
