AP Poll: Majority of Democrats Believe Biden is Too Old for Second Term
Americans Express Concerns About President Biden’s Age
A recent poll has revealed that a majority of Americans, including nearly 70% of Democrats, believe that President Joe Biden is too old for another term in office.
About 69% of Democrats and 77% of voters expressed the opinion that Biden is not fit to serve another four years, as reported by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey.
Only 22% of voters disagreed, stating that Biden is not too old for another presidential term.
The poll also included a word association exercise, asking participants to provide the first word or phrase that comes to mind when thinking of both Biden and GOP frontrunner Donald Trump.
Surprisingly, around 28% of Democrats mentioned Biden’s age. Even one Democrat who approved of Biden’s performance referred to him as “senile.” Democrats seemed to prefer associating Biden with his age rather than terms like “president,” “leader,” “strong,” or “capable.”
Among all respondents, approximately 15% used words like ”slow” or “confused,” while another 26% mentioned Biden’s age. Interestingly, one Republican simply said, “potato.”
On the other hand, the top words associated with Trump were “corrupt” or ”crooked,” with 15% of people using those terms. 11% used negative terms like “bad,” 8% used words like ”liar” and “dishonest,” and 8% used positive comments like “good.”
When asked about the upcoming 2024 elections, about three-fourths of respondents expressed their disinterest in Biden running again, while slightly fewer, 69%, said they do not want former President Donald Trump to run either.
Furthermore, approximately 74% of voters believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction, according to the poll.
Biden’s favorability rating has been declining for months. The poll found that about 52% of Americans currently hold an unfavorable opinion of the president.
Even worse, Biden’s approval rating on individual policy areas is quite low. Around 63% disapprove of how he handles the economy, and 56% disapprove of his conduct in foreign policy matters. Additionally, about 45% lack confidence in Biden’s ability to effectively manage the White House.
Corruption is another significant concern associated with Biden’s presidency.
A majority of voters, 57%, lack confidence in Biden’s ability to reduce corruption in the government in Washington.
Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his alleged criminal behavior and financial dealings with foreign countries have been a persistent issue since his father’s campaign. This issue is likely to resurface during the upcoming election cycle, especially now that a special counsel has been appointed to investigate Hunter Biden.
Nevertheless, Biden remains the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination and is seeking a second term.
According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Biden is currently polling at about 65.5% for the nomination, followed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 12.8% and self-help author Marianne Williamson at 6.8%.
Meanwhile, Trump is also leading in the polls for the Republican nomination, despite facing numerous felony charges in four criminal cases.
Currently, the former president is polling at 53%, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in second place, followed by tech entrepreneur and political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy.
In terms of political ideology, just under half of the respondents in the Associated Press poll, approximately 47%, consider themselves moderate. Only 21% identify as liberal, while 31% consider themselves conservative.
The poll surveyed 1,165 adults from August 10 to 14, with a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
