Amy Coney Barrett embraces public scrutiny of Supreme Court, unfazed by criticism.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett Embraces Public Scrutiny of Supreme Court
Justice Amy Coney Barrett made it clear that she welcomes public scrutiny of the Supreme Court, emphasizing that it is not a new phenomenon. Since her appointment to the bench in 2020 by former President Donald Trump, Barrett has developed a “thick skin” to handle criticism.
During an interview at the 7th Circuit Judicial Conference in Wisconsin, Barrett, who is still relatively new to the high court, acknowledged that criticism is to be expected for jurists. She reminded everyone that justices and judges are public figures, and public criticism is part of the job.
“Justices and all judges are public figures and public criticism comes with the job,” Barrett stated.
Barrett expressed her belief that justices should not be easily recognizable in today’s world, unlike in the past when people didn’t know who the justices were. She discussed the impact of technology, particularly push notifications on phones, which constantly expose the public to news stories, including those about the high court.
Chief Judge Diane S. Sykes, who interviewed Barrett, did not delve into recent Supreme Court decisions or the ethical dilemmas surrounding other justices. Instead, the focus was on Barrett’s perspective on public scrutiny and her experience since joining the court.
Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, Barrett served as a judge on the 7th Circuit. She succeeded the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2020.
“I’ve been at it for a couple of years now,” Barrett said. “I’ve acquired a thick skin, and I think that’s what other figures have to do. I think that’s what all judges have to do.”
Barrett’s public appearance follows recent discussions about ethics within the Supreme Court. Justice Elena Kagan expressed support for an ethics code, although there is no consensus among the justices on how to proceed. Justice Samuel Alito has argued against Congress imposing a code of ethics on the high court, while Justice Sonia Sotomayor faced scrutiny for potential ethical violations related to her book promotions.
Overall, Barrett’s remarks highlight her willingness to embrace public scrutiny and her understanding of the evolving challenges faced by the Supreme Court in the digital age.
