Former President Donald Trump recently shed light on his decision to skip the first Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee. In a Truth Social post, he revealed that his poll numbers have actually increased since the “boring” and poorly-rated debate. Trump confidently stated, “I made the right decision, and broke all records with the Tucker Carlson Interview!”

Trump’s decision to skip the debate was partly due to his opposition to the Republican National Committee’s pledge, which required candidates to support the ultimate winner of the primary. Instead, he opted for a video interview with Tucker Carlson, which garnered nearly 300 million impressions on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk.
Furthermore, President Trump’s mugshot in a Georgia election case generated significant attention, resulting in $7.1 million in donations to his campaign. This mugshot served as his first post on X in over two years.
While some polls indicate a slight decrease in Trump’s support following the debate, an average of polls from RealClearPolitics shows only a 1.5 percentage point dip from August 20 to August 29. In fact, his support even increased by 0.9 percent from August 28 to August 29.
Steve Doocy of Fox News, however, suggested that voters are exploring other Republican candidates, claiming that Trump’s absence from the debate was a mistake. Nonetheless, an internal poll from the Trump campaign reveals that he maintains a 39-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a head-to-head matchup.
Despite the lower viewership compared to his previous presidential campaign, the first debate still attracted 13 million viewers and outperformed other programs on that evening. Fox News and Nielsen reported that it was the best-performing non-sports program of the year.
President Trump remains confident in his decision to skip the debate, emphasizing the lackluster performance of some participants and the overall disappointing ratings.
