NASCAR faces backlash for alleged diversity internship discrimination.
An Engaging Look at NASCAR’s Controversial Internship Program
An internship program from NASCAR has recently come under fire for its alleged discrimination against white individuals. Critics argue that the program, known as the NASCAR Diversity Internship Program, may be in violation of the law.
The program offers paid internships to college students, providing them with valuable mentorship in the racing industry. However, one of the requirements for applicants is to belong to one or more ethnicities, with white or Caucasian not being included on the list.
“Having a 100% quota for minorities for a position is illegal even under a very generous view of what is allowed,” stated David Bernstein, a law professor at George Mason University.
Bernstein further argues that this program is “blatantly illegal” and appears to violate Title VII and the 1866 Civil Rights Act. Title VII, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, protects individuals from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin in all aspects of employment.
NASCAR’s Commitment to Diversity
In addition to the controversial internship program, NASCAR also offers a program called ”Drive for Diversity.” This initiative aims to train individuals from minority and female backgrounds to become drivers or pit crew members. The program’s requirements specify that applicants must be women or belong to one or more ethnic minority classifications.
It’s worth noting that NASCAR is not the only company facing criticism for creating programs that exclude white individuals. Retailer Best Buy, for example, received backlash for its professional development program exclusively for employees who identify as Black, Latino, Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific Islander. Despite the program’s recent launch in 2022, social media users have already called for a boycott of Best Buy.
As the debate surrounding these programs continues, it raises important questions about diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities in the workplace.
