White House sends well wishes to Scalise after cancer diagnosis: ‘Heartbreaking update’
White House Press Secretary Wishes Rep. Steve Scalise a Speedy Recovery
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed her well wishes to Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) on Tuesday after he announced his cancer diagnosis earlier in the day.
Scalise, the House Majority Leader, revealed that he had begun treatment for multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer that can be treated. In a post on X, the popular social media platform, Scalise stated his intention to continue working while undergoing treatment.
“I am incredibly grateful that we caught this early and that this cancer is treatable,” Scalise wrote. “I am thankful for my exceptional medical team, and with the support of God, my family, friends, colleagues, and constituents, I will face this challenge with the same determination and vigor as I have faced previous obstacles.”
When asked about Scalise’s diagnosis, Jean-Pierre expressed her sympathy, stating, “Obviously, that’s devastating news. Our hearts and prayers go out to the congressman and his family.”
Jean-Pierre acknowledged the hardships Scalise has endured in recent years, including being shot by a gunman targeting Republican lawmakers in 2017. However, she did not confirm whether President Joe Biden had plans to speak with Scalise in the near future.
“I don’t have any announcements regarding a call at this time, but it is indeed very sad news,” she added. “We are certainly hoping for a speedy recovery for him.”
