US to provide Ukraine with additional $250M in military aid due to Pentagon accounting error.
The Biden Administration Sends $250 Million in Weapons and Ammunition to Ukraine
The Biden administration is taking action to support Ukraine in its ongoing counteroffensive against Russia. In a significant move, $250 million worth of weapons and ammunition will be sent to Ukraine to bolster its military capabilities.
This military aid package will be executed using presidential drawdown authority (PDA), which allows the Pentagon to quickly transfer weapons from existing U.S. stockpiles to Ukraine. This marks the 45th drawdown of equipment from U.S. stocks to Ukraine since August 2021.
The package includes a range of essential equipment, such as AIM-9M missiles for air defense, munitions for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, artillery ammunition, mine-clearing equipment, anti-armor systems, small arms ammunition, medical vehicles, and demolition munitions for obstacle clearing.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized the importance of this aid package, stating that it will provide crucial support to Ukrainian forces on the battlefield and enhance their air defenses. She also condemned Russia’s continued brutal attacks on Ukraine.
The funding for this $250 million package comes from an “accounting error” announced by the Pentagon in June. The error resulted in an overcounting of the value of weapons sent to Ukraine over the past two years, freeing up additional funding.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the United States has already provided Ukraine with over $43 billion worth of military assistance. This assistance has been delivered through the PDA and the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), with the USAI taking longer to arrive compared to the PDA.
This aid has been crucial in providing Ukraine with the necessary weapons systems and ammunition to defend itself against the larger Russian military. However, much of the ammunition and weaponry has already been depleted during the 18-month-long land war.
The Biden administration remains confident in its ability to meet Ukraine’s needs through the fiscal year. However, there is a request for a supplemental package, and they hope that Congress will approve it.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his support for continued aid to Ukraine, emphasizing the ongoing brutality of Russia’s war and the need for Russia to withdraw its forces.
