AOC claims immigration is possibly the Biden administration’s weakest point.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Immigration is the Administration’s Weakest Issue
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has described immigration as “arguably this administration’s weakest issue,” raising concerns among the public and Republican lawmakers regarding the southern border.
When asked to grade President Joe Biden’s handling of the border crisis, Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that there are currently more asylum-seekers held in private detention centers than during the Trump administration. She also criticized the Biden administration for retaining Trump-era immigration policies.
“Immigration is arguably this administration’s weakest issue,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “This is one area where our policy is dictated by politics, arguably more so than almost any other. There are very clear recommendations and suggestions that we have made to the administration to provide relief on this issue, and it’s my belief that some of the hesitation around this has to do with a fear around just being seen as approving or providing permission structures, or really just the Republican narratives that have surrounded immigration.”
Ocasio-Cortez also addressed the question of why she, as a major Democrat in Congress, has not yet visited the southern border. She stated that visiting the border is something they are actively planning on. However, she emphasized that she has been touring New York facilities and believes that “this crisis is in our own backyard.”
Regarding New York residents protesting immigrants being sent to New York City, Ocasio-Cortez clarified that residents are still welcoming, but they need partnership from the federal government. A recent poll showed that 62% of registered voters in New York City support relocating immigrants to other parts of the state.
“I think the issue that New Yorkers have is not that there are immigrants coming to New York City, but that immigrants are being prevented from sustaining and supporting themselves,” Ocasio-Cortez explained. “We have New Yorkers, and we have New York businesses, that want to receive migrants and want to employ migrants. And that includes across the state.”
The objection from New York residents about immigrants being sent to their state coincides with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) busing immigrants to major Democratic cities, including New York City. Abbott has sent multiple buses to the city, causing further controversy.
Biden has faced significant criticism for his administration’s handling of the border. A recent poll revealed that 48% of likely U.S. voters rated Biden as poor in “handling issues related to immigration,” while only 33% gave him a ”good or excellent” rating on immigration.
On Tuesday evening, investigative reporter Sarah Bedford described the southern border as an “unmitigated disaster” for the Biden administration. Bedford also noted that a majority of independents and Democrats are beginning to acknowledge the severity of the border situation.
