California is providing hurricane aid to the Gulf Coast.
California Governor Sends Aid to Florida and Georgia in Response to Hurricane Idalia
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on August 29th that assistance is on its way to Florida and Georgia to support search and rescue operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia. The powerful Category 3 storm brought surges and high winds to the Gulf Coast, causing significant damage.
“When disaster strikes, Americans come together,” Mr. Newsom said in a press release.
Nine members of California’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces are collaborating with California’s Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide aid in the hardest-hit areas, according to Governor Newsom.
According to the press release, three members will be deployed to Atlanta, Georgia, while six will be stationed in Orlando, Florida.
Evacuation orders have been issued in some coastal areas due to the expected flash flooding and compromised power lines caused by the high winds. In Tallahassee, Florida, a historic 100-year-old oak tree fell onto the Governor’s Mansion during the storm, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis provided updates, stating that there have been no reported deaths resulting from the storm, and all search and rescue teams are actively working in the affected areas.
“We do not have any confirmed fatalities, yet,” Mr. DeSantis said at the press conference. “We’re still assessing what is all going on on the ground in the places that had the initial impact. We have a lot of people going in offering assistance from the state’s perspective and helping counties stabilize the situation.”
Currently, more than 250,000 homes and businesses are without power, but efforts are underway to restore electricity. Utility workers have already managed to reconnect service to 266,000 locations, according to Governor DeSantis.
Airports are gradually reopening, and the assessment of ports in the area is ongoing, with operations expected to resume soon.
While people are advised to avoid beaches, one surfer had to be rescued from Jacksonville Beach due to heavy surf.
A few hours after making landfall, officials downgraded Idalia to a tropical storm, noting that winds were gusting at 70 miles per hour. At that time, the storm was located 40 miles west of Savannah, Georgia.
With the storm impacting multiple states in the region, officials are urging residents to prioritize safety, stay indoors whenever possible, and avoid downed power lines or flooded roads.
This is not the first time California has provided aid to Florida. Last year, the state also sent assistance when Hurricane Ian struck.
