Federal judge finds Rudy Giuliani liable for defaming Georgia election workers, sanctions ex-NYC mayor.
Federal Judge Rules Against Rudy Giuliani in Defamation Case
A federal judge delivered a scathing default judgment against former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, holding him liable for defaming two Georgia election workers. U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell stated in a 57-page ruling that Giuliani flagrantly violated her orders and failed to produce evidence to support his claims of election fraud.
As a result, Judge Howell ordered Giuliani to pay approximately $133,000 in sanctions for attorneys’ fees. She emphasized the importance of following the proper legal process and warned against taking shortcuts.
Giuliani’s Allegations and Lawsuit
Giuliani had accused election workers Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea’ ArShaye Moss of mishandling ballots during the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. However, prosecutors alleged that Giuliani made false statements and participated in a scheme to subvert the election.
In response to Giuliani’s claims, Freeman and Moss filed a defamation lawsuit against him and One America News Network. They claimed that Giuliani’s statements led to threats and harassment, causing them to fear for their safety.
Judge Orders Further Damages and Financial Documents
Judge Howell ordered the case to proceed to trial to determine additional damages that Giuliani may owe, which could potentially amount to thousands or even millions of dollars. She also instructed Giuliani to submit financial documents and records related to his podcast, “Common Sense,” before September 20.
Giuliani’s Political Adviser Responds
In response to the ruling, Giuliani’s political adviser, Ted Goodman, criticized the judge’s lengthy opinion on discovery and accused the justice system of being weaponized. He called for the decision to be reversed.
Giuliani’s Statement and Defense
Last week, before surrendering at the Fulton County jail in Georgia, Giuliani made a statement defending his actions and asserting that he was fighting for justice. He warned that the government’s targeting of Trump could set a dangerous precedent for the rights of all Americans.
Giuliani concluded by echoing Trump’s claim that the federal government would come after ordinary citizens. He expressed concern about the politicization and criminalization of the justice system, emphasizing the importance of honest and trustworthy Republicans.
