Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Stabbing and Arson
VISTA, Calif.—In a shocking and horrifying crime, a man has been sentenced to 31 years to life in state prison for stabbing another man multiple times inside an Escondido home and then setting the residence on fire while the victim was still inside.
Jose Trinidad Romero, 35, was found guilty of first-degree murder and arson for the killing of 50-year-old Procopio Blanco Cervantes. Firefighters discovered Cervantes inside the burning Waverly Place home on October 4, 2020.
Prosecutors presented compelling evidence, including surveillance footage that captured Romero and Cervantes entering the home together. Moments before the house went up in flames, Romero was seen leaving the premises.

As firefighters battled the blaze, they discovered Cervantes in the kitchen of the house, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to Escondido police.
Romero was apprehended a few days after the incident, leading to his arrest.
Although the motive for the killing was not disclosed, during Romero’s arraignment in late 2020, a prosecutor alleged that the men had a dispute over property left behind at the residence.
