Man Sentenced to Life in ⁣Prison for⁣ Stabbing and Arson

VISTA, Calif.—In a⁢ shocking and horrifying⁢ crime, ​a man has been sentenced to ⁢31 years to ​life ⁢in state prison for stabbing‌ another man multiple times​ inside an Escondido⁢ home‌ and ⁣then setting the residence on‌ fire while the victim was still⁣ inside.

Jose Trinidad Romero, 35, was found guilty of ⁣first-degree murder and arson ⁣for the killing of 50-year-old Procopio⁤ Blanco ⁢Cervantes. ⁤Firefighters discovered Cervantes inside the burning Waverly‍ Place home on ​October 4, 2020.

Prosecutors presented compelling evidence,​ including surveillance footage that captured Romero and ⁢Cervantes entering the home together. Moments before the house went up in flames, Romero was seen leaving the premises.

As firefighters battled the blaze, they discovered Cervantes in the ‍kitchen of ​the​ house, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital,⁤ according to Escondido⁤ police.

Romero was ​apprehended a few days after the incident,‌ leading ⁣to his arrest.

Although the motive for the killing was⁤ not disclosed, during Romero’s arraignment⁤ in late 2020, a prosecutor alleged that the men had a dispute over ‍property left behind at the residence.
