Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Oprah Winfrey give $10M to Maui cause.
Media Mogul Oprah Winfrey and Actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Launch Fund for Maui Wildfire Victims
Media mogul Oprah Winfrey and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have joined forces to create a fund aimed at helping those affected by the devastating Maui wildfires. In a heartfelt announcement on Instagram, the duo introduced their followers to the People’s Fund of Maui, a charitable initiative that aims to provide direct financial assistance to those impacted by the recent wildfires.
Within just one hour of the announcement, the fund had already received an impressive $40,000 in donations, in addition to the $10 million contributed by Winfrey and Johnson themselves.
Putting Money Directly into the Hands of Those in Need
“As we have witnessed firsthand, the wildfires have caused immense devastation,” wrote Winfrey and Johnson in their Instagram caption. “We want to assure you that every dollar donated will go directly to the residents of Lahaina who have been affected by this tragedy. Every adult resident who was displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula will be eligible to receive $1200 per month to support their recovery.”
While the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been providing immediate aid of $700 to affected residents, the People’s Fund of Maui aims to offer additional support to renters and homeowners above the age of 18 who have lost their residences.
“We understand that many people are skeptical about where their donations go,” said Johnson in a video statement. ”That’s why we are committed to complete transparency. The number one need right now is money.”
A Personal Connection to the Cause
Both Winfrey and Johnson have personal ties to the Hawaiian islands. Winfrey owns a home in Maui, while Johnson’s mother was born and raised in Hawaii. The two celebrities collaborated under the Entertainment Industry Foundation to establish the People’s Fund of Maui, which has been recognized as a 4-star charity by Charity Navigator.
The fund is expected to remain operational for as long as possible, providing ongoing support to the affected residents of Lahaina.
