NYC Mayor Eric Adams urges Biden Admin to speed up work permits for undocumented immigrants.
New York City Mayor Urges Biden Administration to Expedite Work Permits for Illegal Immigrants
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is taking a stand and calling on the Biden administration to fast-track work permits for the influx of illegal immigrants in his city. Joined by labor union leaders, Mayor Adams rallied in Manhattan on Thursday, highlighting the pressing issue of over 100,000 illegal immigrants who have sought refuge in the city’s “sanctuary city” promise and are now eager to find employment.
Mayor Adams emphasized that these individuals arrived in New York City with one question in mind: ”Can we work?” Unfortunately, due to federal law, they are currently not permitted to do so.

“They are being held back from pursuing the American Dreams that generations of newcomers and New Yorkers have achieved,” Mayor Adams wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“The #AmericanDreamWorks, but only if we expedite work authorization NOW,” he added.
Mayor Adams highlighted the abundance of job opportunities in New York City and presented it as a chance for skilled adult illegal immigrants to contribute to the workforce. However, critics have expressed concerns about the strain on city resources, particularly in shelters, and have placed blame on the Biden administration. Recently, protests erupted on Staten Island over the opening of a shelter in a former Catholic school.
Undeterred, Mayor Adams continues to advocate for federal support, stating, “Go into your lineage. Go see when your parents or grandparents came here. Imagine people saying to them, ‘There is no place for you here.’ That is wrong and that is not who we are as a city or as a country.”
Joining Mayor Adams in his plea for expedited work permits, the New York City Council’s leadership released a statement urging federal support to enable the newest arrivals to enter the workforce and achieve self-sufficiency. The statement was signed by Speaker Adrienne Adams, Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala, Majority Leader Keith Powers, Majority Whip Selvena Brooks-Powers, Finance Chair Justin Brannan, Council Member Gale Brewer, and Council Member Rafael Salamanca.
20 Percent of Illegal Immigrants Haven’t Applied for Permits
New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently met with Biden administration officials to discuss support for communities housing illegal immigrants. During the meeting, it was revealed that a significant portion of recent illegal immigrants in New York City are eligible to work but have not yet applied for work permits. Nationwide, only around 16 percent of eligible working-age arrivals have applied for work authorization.
White House officials noted that among the illegal immigrants in New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania who entered the country through the CBP One parole program, 20 percent are eligible to work immediately if they apply. To address this issue, the Biden administration and Governor Hochul have agreed on a month-long campaign in September that will utilize SMS and email to offer support and encourage eligible illegal immigrants of working age to apply for permits.
