New apprehension data undermines Biden’s border narrative.
Surge in Illegal Border Crossings Continues
According to preliminary data reported by The Washington Post, apprehensions of illegal immigrants have surged from 132,652 in July to over 177,000 in August.
This significant increase indicates a consistent and substantial rise in illegal border crossing attempts month over month since June, when there were 99,539 reported apprehensions.
In addition, the data reveals that August saw the crossing of 91,000 migrants categorized as part of a family unit, breaking the previous record set in May 2019.
Claims of Border Control
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed that the Biden administration is “stopping the flow at the border” and that Biden has “done more” to secure the border than any previous administration.
However, the reality is that illegal border crossings have surged under the Biden administration. Since Biden took office in 2021, an estimated 1.5 million illegal immigrants have successfully entered the United States. This number is three times higher than the total reported gotaways during the three years of the Trump administration.
Furthermore, there has been a 1,000% increase in illegal immigration from various countries, including China, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and the Dominican Republic.
Concerns for Border Communities
Americans living in border communities have expressed growing concern for their family’s safety. One wife of a border patrol agent shared a harrowing experience where an illegal immigrant knocked on her seven-year-old daughter’s window late at night. She had to intervene and push a group of illegals off their property to protect her family.

Impact on Major Cities
The record-high increases in illegal immigration have not only affected border communities but have also strained major cities far north of the border, such as Chicago and New York. These cities have struggled to house and accommodate foreign nationals.
Chicago has allocated $51 million in funding to provide housing and food for migrants, while 50 places of worship in New York City are now being used to accommodate foreign nationals.
Residents of New York recently protested against a plan to convert a former nursing home into a housing center for migrants.
Surge in Northern Border Crossings
Illegal immigration has also spiked on the northern border, with a 36% increase in July. The number of recorded encounters at the northern border has risen from 916 in fiscal year 2021 to 2,238 in fiscal year 2022. Between October 2022 and July 2023, there have been 7,633 encounters.
One northern border patrol agent was allegedly assaulted while making apprehensions in the Swanton Border Patrol sector, which spans New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.
Financial Impact and Public Opinion
Estimates suggest that illegal immigration costs United States taxpayers approximately $151 billion annually. A recent report from Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee highlights the significant financial strain illegal immigration places on the American medical system.
Multiple public opinion surveys indicate that voters disapprove of Biden’s handling of the border. A Fox News poll conducted in late June found that 62% of respondents disapproved of Biden’s handling of immigration, while only 35% approved.
