Four deaths occurred in the past month at an Atlanta jail, where a man had previously died in a cell infested with bugs.
Four Inmates Dead in a Month at Fulton County Jail
Tragedy strikes the Fulton County jail in Atlanta, Georgia, as four inmates have lost their lives within a span of just one month. The latest victim, Samuel Lawrence, 34, was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday morning. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has announced that an investigation will be conducted by the Atlanta Police Department, and an autopsy will be performed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death.
This unfortunate incident marks the fourth death in a month at the Fulton County jail. Alexander Hawkins, 66; Christopher Smith, 34; and Montay Stinson, 40, have also tragically lost their lives while being held at the facility.
Alexander Hawkins was discovered unresponsive in his medical unit cell on August 14. Despite efforts to revive him, medical personnel were unable to save him. Hawkins was being held on a shoplifting charge.
Christopher Smith, like Lawrence, was found unresponsive in a medical unit cell. He too was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead. Smith was facing several unspecified felony and misdemeanor charges.
Montay Stinson, who showed no obvious signs of injury, was also found unresponsive in his cell. Medical personnel’s attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Concerns Over Jail Conditions
The recent deaths at the Fulton County jail have raised serious concerns about the facility’s conditions. In July, the U.S. Department of Justice initiated a civil rights investigation following the death of Lashawn Thompson, who was found dead in a filthy jail cell after being infested with insects and bed bugs. Thompson’s family received a $4 million settlement from the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.
Attorney Michael Harper, representing Thompson’s family, stated that jail records indicated officials and medical staff were aware of Thompson’s deteriorating health but failed to provide him with the necessary aid. Harper also revealed that a detention officer refused to administer CPR when Thompson’s body was discovered.
The cell where Thompson was held was described as unfit for any living being.
It is important to address the issues surrounding the Fulton County jail and ensure the safety and well-being of all inmates.
