The Alaska State Board of Education Votes to Ban Boys from Girls’ High School Athletic Teams
The Alaska State Board of Education made a significant decision on Thursday, voting to support a regulation that would prohibit boys from competing on girls’ high school athletic teams. This move aims to address the ongoing debate surrounding transgender athletes in sports.
The board had initially delayed its vote on this issue back in July, taking the time to carefully consider the matter. They listened to hours of testimony and reviewed a staggering 1,400 pages of written comments, demonstrating their commitment to making an informed decision.
In a special session, the board voted 7-1 in favor of the measure, signaling their support for the ban. However, the proposal still needs approval from Republican Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor before it can be implemented.
“If a separate high school athletics team is established for female students, participation shall be limited to females who were assigned female at birth,” the regulation states.
Unsurprisingly, this decision has sparked controversy and drawn strong reactions from various parties. Michael Garvey, the advocacy director for the ACLU of Alaska, expressed his disappointment, stating that this move directly targets Alaskan students who simply want to participate in sports like any other child.
Board member Lorri Van Diest acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, emphasizing the need to strike a balance between inclusion, competitive fairness, and safety in high school girls’ athletics.
This ban aligns with similar laws enacted in multiple states across the country. These laws aim to prevent student-athletes from competing on teams that do not align with their biological sex. For instance, Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a ban in 2021 that prohibits biological men from participating in women’s sports in public schools.
It’s important to note that board member Bob Griffin clarified that the issue at hand is not about gender identity but rather the performance differences between biological males and females and the implications for competitive fairness.
As of now, the Alaska Board of Education and the ACLU of Alaska have not responded to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
