Man Sentenced to 15 Years to Life for Fatal Shooting of Rite Aid Employee
In a tragic incident that occurred two years ago, a Glassell Park man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of a Rite Aid employee. The sentencing took place on September 1.
Anthony Lemus, 22, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in April of this year, relating to the 2021 shooting. Despite his attempt to withdraw his plea the following month, his efforts were unsuccessful.
The incident took place on July 15, 2021, when Miguel Penaloza, 36, was shot while trying to stop two young men from stealing two cases of beer from the Rite Aid store located in the 4000 block of Eagle Rock Boulevard. Tragically, Mr. Penaloza lost his life in the process.

The coroner’s office confirmed that Mr. Penaloza was shot in the chest and tragically died at the scene.
Following the incident, Mr. Lemus surrendered himself to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Station on July 26, 2021.
